Why this works
Cha-cha-cha was designed to be followable. It grew out of the danzon-mambo when the syncopation in the melodies had become slippery for social dancers, and the fix was to bring the melody closer to the beat and simplify the underlying rhythm.
That clarity is why it works in mixed company. Everyone can find the count, including people who would lose a salsa in the first bar.
